Address and diary, 1862-1874.

Diary, 1862, discusses the movements of the 1st and 54th Alabama, the siege of New Madrid (Mo.), Baker's capture at Island 10, and his experiences at the Union prisons of Camp Chase (Ohio) and Johnson's Island (Ohio). Baker discusses in detail the activities and battles of the Confederate Army, troop camp life in the field and in prisoner of war camps, and includes ink and pencil sketches of individuals and an intricate colored map of the siege of New Madrid (Mo.). Address, ca.1865-1874, Eufaula, Barbour County, Ala., in which Alpheus Baker addresses the black delegates of the Ala. House of Representatives concerning their allegiance to the Republican party.

A native of Virginia, Meriwether Jefferson Thompson moved to Missouri in 1847. An ardent secessionist, he was elected brigadier general of the 1st Division of the Missouri State Guard in July 1861. Alpheus Baker was born in 1825 in Abbeville, S.C., and became a teacher. In 1848 he settled in Glenville (Ala.) and began studying law, was admitted to the bar in 1849, and practiced in Eufaula (Ala.). He served in the Confederate Army as the Captain of the "Eufaula Rifles" in the 1st Alabama.
